Hope Community Chapel
While in Ghana I
attended the University of Ghana in the Accra region, and volunteered at
a wonderful orphanage called Hope Community Chapel. The study abroad
program I went on is affiliated with an organization in Ghana called the Aya Center, which has recently opened its own non-governmental
organization (NGO).
Hope is home to about 25 children, all boys. Their
ages range from 8 to 24 with the majority being in their early teens.
The children at Hope were found on the street or given to the home
because their parents were unable to take care of them.
One of my main goals for Hope is to collect enough money to sponsor each child for one year, and then hopefully continue that tradition.
Hope Community
Chapel is funded by private donations like the one made by our church.
The director of Hope is Pastor Ashley. Pastor Ashley lives at the Home
with his wife and daughter and serves as a father to all of the boys.
The boys at Hope attend schools in the Accra area. If they are over
school age or have had no formal education they are sent to learn a
specific trade such as carpentry.

While in Ghana, I went to Hope a few times a week and taught the boys after they were done with school. I usually taught English grammar and spelling, Math, and geography. I also took the boys on field trips, such as playing soccer on campus or playing in the park at the botanical gardens. It was amazing to interact with these boys – many come from very troubled backgrounds and have been through more in their short lives than most of us ever will. Yet regardless of their backgrounds they are still fun-loving charismatic kids who love Uno, soccer, dancing, and jokes.

I want to sincerely thank
the congregation for their donations, which were used mostly for the
purchase of food items and school fees. However, future donations are
still needed and welcomed.
Sponsorship for a child for one year costs $500
to $1,000 depending on the age of the child.
The cost of sponsoring a child includes:
- Food
- Housing
- Medical needs
- General upkeep
- School fees (transport, exam fees, uniforms, supplies & books)
It is my hope that
congregation members, families, and/or church groups will come together
and raise the money to sponsor a child for a year. Individuals and
groups who adopt a child can
keep in touch with their child through
letters and/or phone calls.
People are also welcome to send packages or
make one-time donations to Hope. I
sincerely hope you will take the time to consider making a donation to
this amazing home, whether it is a one-time donation or sponsorship of a
child.
